'Little Gaia' - 4"x5" Original Lino Print
'Little Gaia' - 4"x5" Original Lino Print
Gaia was a primordial goddess to the ancient Greeks, the personification of Earth brought into being at the dawn of creation. This was the last time in the West the Earth was culturally regarded as sacred.
If Gaia had a human face, I think she would have an expression of suffering. In the words of Jules Cashford, “it’s almost as if the world longs for us to relate to her and become one with her. Why do we think we’re not?”. Let’s know her. See more on Gaia below.
A three-colour original lino print on 90gsm Hosho japanese paper. Signed edition of 12.
Gaia knows about violence - she was born from chaos itself, and herself birthed all manner of catastrophes - hurricanes, volcanos, earthquakes… her husband Ouranos (the sky father) pushed her cyclops children back into her womb ‘for offending his eyes’. His hate, like all hate, was rooted in fear - his horror and revulsion that he could have fathered such strange and ugly things was what caused him to commit this unspeakably violent act.
But Gaia also facilitates life and light, sun-drenched valleys and glittering oceans, trees, flowers and herbs, of pillowy moss and great canyons of rock. So she also knows about peace, and shelter, sustenance.
